Amazon announced that July 15, 2015, its 20th birthday, would be "Amazon Prime Day", with deals for prime members similar to those on Black Friday.[20] That month Amazon Prime announced[21] signed up Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, formerly of BBC's Top Gear, to begin working on The Grand Tour, which was released in 2016. On July 13, 2016, Amazon Prime said customers placed 60 percent more orders worldwide on "Prime Day".[22]

In December 2015, Amazon stated that "tens of millions" of people were Amazon Prime members.[23] Amazon Prime added 3 million members during the third week of December 2015.[24] That month Amazon announced the creation of the Streaming Partners Program,[25] a subscription service that provides Amazon Prime subscribers with additional streaming video services. Among the programming providers involved in the program are Showtime, Starz. Lifetime Movie Club (containing recent original movie titles from Lifetime Television and Lifetime Movie Network), Smithsonian Earth, and Qello Concerts.

2016 onward

The service debuted on September 7, 2006 as Amazon Unbox in the United States. On September 4, 2008, the service was renamed Amazon Video on Demand. The Unbox name still refers to the local program, which as of August 2014 is no longer available for downloading purchased instant videos. On February 22, 2011, the service rebranded as Amazon Instant Video.

In April 2014, Amazon began a service for shipping non-perishable grocery store items into a single box for delivery for a flat fee. The service is available in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, India, Japan, Italy, Spain, and France. This is an Amazon Prime member exclusive service that helps prime subscribers purchase household goods and get them delivered fast. At a flat rate of $6, Amazon Prime members can enjoy shipping a box of "pantries" to their homes. As you shop, Amazon quantifies the space each item takes up so that you can assess the number of boxes you need before check off and shipping.[citation needed]

Prime Now

In December 2014, Amazon announced that as a benefit to Prime members located in parts of Manhattan and New York City the capability to get products delivered to them within one hour for a fee of $7.99, or within two hours for no additional fee. As of 2014, 25,000 daily essential products were available with this delivery service.[43] In February 2015, the service was extended to include all of Manhattan.[44] By mid-2016, it had been expanded in the United States to include parts of Chicago, Miami, Baltimore,[45] Seattle, Dallas, Atlanta, Austin, Nashville, Portland, San Antonio, and Tampa.[46][47][48] Outside of the United States, it has expanded to parts of the United Kingdom,[49] Italy,[50] Germany,[51] France,[52] Spain,[53] Japan,[54] and Singapore.[55] To meet the on-demand needs of Prime Now, Amazon further launched Amazon Flex, a platform for independent contractors to provide delivery services.[56]

Amazon Key
In-Home
In October 2017, Amazon.com added an option for Prime members to get in-home deliveries by its Amazon Flex contractors, who gain entry using a one-time code.[57] The service, Amazon Key, became available for customers residing in 37 United States metro areas in April 2018.[58][59] As of 2018 the service required a Kwikset or Yale smart lock and a special version of Amazon's Cloud Cam security camera.[60]

Customers are given a time window of four hours for the package to be delivered. Once the courier opens the door, the Cloud Cam records a clip until the door is locked, which is sent to the customer's smartphone.[61] Participants in the service can also use the Amazon Key companion app for iOS and Android to lock and unlock the door, monitor the camera, and issue virtual keys.[62]

A month after the service was launched, a security expert found a flaw, since patched, in the system which would freeze the camera and stop image transmission.[63]

In-Car
Amazon Key In-Car is a service allowing owners of vehicles with OnStar (that are 2015+ models) or Volvo on Call, to get packages delivered in their vehicle's trunk.[64] The service is available in the same areas as Amazon Key's In-Home delivery, but requires no additional hardware.[65] Customers are provided with a four-hour delivery window.[66] During that time, their vehicle must be located in a publicly accessible area.[67]

In-Garage
At CES 2019, Amazon announced a partnership with the Chamberlain Group, allowing packages to be placed in customers garages with myQ-enabled openers, as part of the Key service.[68]

Prime Air
Main article: Amazon Prime Air
60 Minutes announced on December 1, 2013 that Amazon Prime Air was a possible future delivery service expected to be in development for several more years. In concept, the process would use drones to deliver small packages (less than five pounds) within 30 minutes by flying short distances (10–20 km) from local Amazon Fulfillment Centers.[69][70] In the United States, the project will require the Federal Aviation Administration to approve commercial use of unmanned drones.[71]

In July 2014, it was revealed the company was developing its 8th and 9th drone prototypes, some that could fly 50 miles an hour and carry 5-pound packages, and had applied to the FAA to test them.[72]

Despite the company's confidence, the project is not yet in flight, and Amazon is awaiting both patents and logistic agreements from the US and UK governments.

Prime Day
On July 15, 2015, in honor of the website's 20th anniversary, Amazon first held Prime Day. The event features a large number of sales and promotions that are exclusively available to Amazon Prime subscribers, with Amazon promoting that the first edition would feature "more deals than Black Friday". The inaugural Prime Day faced criticism over the quality of the discounts offered, with many of them being tied to items not in high demand. Some users jokingly described the event as a "yard sale", and Walmart also countered the event with a promotional blog post arguing that customers "shouldn't have to pay $100 to find great deals". Amazon defended criticism of the event, noting that order volume on the website had "surpassed" Black Friday sales in 2014.[73][74][75][76][77]

The 2018 edition was preceded by a concert event headlined by Ariana Grande, and streamed on Amazon Video and Twitch.[78] The 2019 concert was held on July 10 ahead of Prime Day starting on the 15th, and streamed exclusively for Prime subscribers, featuring Taylor Swift, Dua Lipa, Becky G, and SZA.[79][80][81]

In 2018, Prime Day first became tied to protests of Amazon and employee strikes due to the treatment of workers at its fulfillment centers. Supporters of these actions have urged boycotts of Amazon during Prime Day as solidarity, covering all services provided by the company or its subsidiaries

Lisandro López (born 2 March 1983), sometimes known as simply Lisandro, is an Argentine professional footballer who plays for Racing Club de Avellaneda. Primarily a striker, he is also capable of playing on the wings.[1]

After starting out at Racing Club in 2003, he spent most of his career with Porto in Portugal and Lyon in France, winning eight major titles between the two teams. He also played professionally in Qatar and Brazil.

López won seven caps for Argentina, over four years
Club career
Racing Club
López was born born in the small town of Rafael Obligado, in Buenos Aires Province's vast agricultural interior region.[2] He arrived at Racing Club de Avellaneda at the age of 18 and, just two years later, made his Argentine Primera División debut in the 2003 Clausura;[2] also in the side was a young Diego Milito leading the attack, and his subsequent exit to Genoa C.F.C. opened the doors to a regular first-team spot which López made his own in 2004.[2]

López was crowned top scorer in the 2004 Apertura tournament, going on to score 26 goals in 71 league appearances and over 30 across all competitions.[3][2] During his spell at the Estadio Presidente Juan Domingo Perón, he was nicknamed Licha.[4][5][6]

Porto
In April 2005, López signed for FC Porto for a transfer fee of €2.3 million, at the same time of compatriot Lucho González. His agents, Global Soccer Agencies (later renamed Rio Football Services),[7] retained 50% of the player's rights[8][9]– in the same transfer window, Luís Fabiano, whose rights were owned by GSA's sister company, "Global Soccer Investments" (75%), left. He scored seven Primeira Liga goals in his first season in 26 games, repeating the feat the following campaign while appearing in one match less;[10] he also found the net in the 1–1 home draw against Rangers in the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League,[11] adding two to help defeat Hamburger SV (also in that competition but in the following edition, 4–1 home win).[12]

In 2007–08, as Porto were crowned league champions for the third consecutive time, López was the competition's top scorer, scoring 24 goals in 27 games[10] and adding three in the season's Champions League. On 20 April 2008, he netted twice – also being booked – in a 2–0 home win against S.L. Benfica;[13] an offer from FC Zenit St. Petersburg was rejected midway through the campaign, and the Portuguese club eventually bought the remaining economic rights of the player for €4.4 million.[14]

López only scored ten goals in 2008–09, but finished fourth in the scoring list in the Champions League with six, only trailing Lionel Messi, Steven Gerrard and Miroslav Klose.[15] Porto wrapped up the season with the conquest of the Taça de Portugal, and he netted the game's only goal in a victory over F.C. Paços de Ferreira.[16]

Lyon
After the sale of Karim Benzema to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009, López replaced him at Olympique Lyonnais, being transferred for a fee of €24 million, plus a €4 million bonus subject to performances.[17] On 8 August, he scored on his Ligue 1 debut from a last-minute free-kick at Le Mans FC, in a 2–2 draw. He added a hat-trick against R.S.C. Anderlecht in the second leg of the Champions League qualifying round, in an eventual 8–2 aggregate win.[1]

On 4 November 2009, López scored a late and decisive equaliser in a group game against Liverpool to ensure Lyon qualified for the knockout stage.[18] Four days later he netted twice in three minutes in a 5–5 league draw to Olympique de Marseille,[19] adding a further three the following month, against Lille OSC – the visitors led 3–1 at half-time, but were eventually defeated 3–4.[20]

On 30 March 2010, López scored twice in the 3–1 home victory against FC Girondins de Bordeaux in the Champions League quarter-finals (3–2 aggregate win), but missed the second leg due to suspension.[21] He continued this good form with a goal in Lyon's 2–1 away defeat of Stade Rennais FC, four days later.[22]

On the final day of the season, López assisted Miralem Pjanić in a 2–0 home win against Le Mans, a result which placed Lyon second in the league table, with the subsequent direct Champions League qualification.[23] On 9 May 2010, he was named Ligue 1 Footballer of the Year.[24]

On 2 October 2010, López scored in a 3–2 away win over AS Nancy for Lyon's second win of the campaign.[25] He added two in the next ligue fixture – one from a penalty kick – a 3–1 defeat of Lille at the Stade de Gerland.[26] On 20 October he found the net again, against Benfica in a 2–0 Champions League group stage win.[27]

After a one-month spell without a goal, López finally added to his account by grabbing a last-minute goal in a 3–1 away win against RC Lens.[28] He added two in another away fixture, against Montpellier HSC (2–1, the second coming in the fifth minute of stoppage time).[29] Three days later Lyon, needing a point to secure passage to the knockout stages of the Champions League, played host to Hapoel Tel Aviv FC, and he opened the scoring in the 62nd minute of an eventual 2–2 home draw.[30]

López scored again in the next match for L'OL in a 2–0 win over Toulouse FC, putting them up to second place in the table.[31] He also found the net in the following game, a 1–1 draw against title holders Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome.[32]

On 6 March 2011, after six scoreless appearances, López scored a hat-trick in the 5–0 thrashing of AC Arles-Avignon.[33] In the 27th matchday he continued his run, opening the scoring in a 2–0 away win against FC Sochaux-Montbéliard.[34] On 10 April, he netted in the 90th minute in a 3–0 home win over Lens[35] and found the net in the following two home fixtures (both 3–2 wins), against Montpellier[36] and Marseille,[37] with his team eventually finishing in third position; on the final day of the season he scored a goal in the 2–0 win over AS Monaco FC, condemning the opposition to their first relegation in 35 years.[38]

López started 2011–12 in fine form, scoring in the first two games, his first coming in the early stages of a 3–1 win at OGC Nice.[39] The following weekend, against newly promoted AC Ajaccio, he hit the post twice in the first ten minutes and had several shots saved by Guillermo Ochoa, but was able to salvage a point for new coach Rémi Garde on his home debut with an excellent header in the 83rd minute.[40]

On 8 January 2012, López scored a hat-trick in a 3–1 win at AS Lyon Duchère for the Coupe de France.[41] Three days later, he netted the 2–1 winner against Lille in the Coupe de la Ligue, in the 64th minute;[42] on the 22nd, in his 100th competitive match for Lyon, he scored against Vendée Luçon Football for the French Cup round-of-32.[43]

On 28 April 2012, López helped Lyon grab victory in the French Cup final, scoring the game's only goal against US Quevilly.[44] In late April of the following year, he announced he was leaving the club in the summer transfer window,[45] with Garde commenting:

I also wanted to make a huge tribute to Licha (López). I will not forget what he did.[46]

Al-Gharafa / Internacional
On 8 August 2013, López signed for Qatari club Al-Gharafa Sports Club, for a fee of €7.2 million.[47] In late February 2015 he changed clubs and countries again, joining Brazil's Sport Club Internacional on a two-year deal.[48][49]

Return to Racing
On 1 January 2016, two months shy of his 33rd birthday, López returned to Racing Club on a free transfer which had been agreed the previous month.[50] In the 2018–19 season, he scored 17 league goals to lead the scoring charts and help his team win the national championship for the 18th time in their history.[51]

International career
In 2005, López was called up to the Argentina national team by José Pékerman, and he made his debut against Mexico on 10 March in a 1–1 friendly draw.[52] After fantastic Porto performances, he was summoned three years later by Alfio Basile for exhibition games with Egypt, Mexico, the United States[53] and Belarus.

On 12 August 2009, López scored one goal in Argentina's 3–2 victory over Russia at the Lokomotiv Stadium in Moscow.[54][55] Nine days later, he was called by national team boss Diego Maradona for the decisive matches against Brazil and Paraguay for the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification, but was overlooked for the final stages in South Africa.

Uber

Uber Technologies, Inc. is an American multinational transportation network company (TNC) offering services that include peer-to-peer ridesharing, ride service hailing, food delivery, and a bicycle-sharing system. The company is based in San Francisco and has operations in over 785 metropolitan areas worldwide.[2] Its platforms can be accessed via its websites and mobile apps.

As of 2019, Uber is estimated to have 110 million worldwide users[4] a 69.0% market share in the United States for passenger transport,[5] and a 25% market share for food delivery.[6] Uber has been so prominent in the sharing economy that the changes in industries as a result of it have been referred to as uberisation,[7][8][9] and many startups have described their products as "Uber for
Passengers
Passengers use an app to order a ride, where they are quoted the fare.[13] Uber uses a dynamic pricing model; prices for the same route vary based on the supply and demand for rides at the time the ride is requested.[14] At the end of the ride, payment is made based on the rider's pre-selected preferences, which could be a credit card on file, Google Pay, Apple Pay, PayPal, cash, or, in India, Airtel mobile wallet[15] or Unified Payments Interface.[16] After the ride is over, the rider is given the option to provide a gratuity to the driver, which is also billed to the rider's payment method.[17] In some locations, if the driver has to wait more than a few minutes after arriving to the pickup location, riders are charged a wait time fee.[18]

Drivers
While Uber is viewing drivers as contractors, courts in the United Kingdom[19] and Switzerland [20] consider their drivers to be employees of the company. The status of drivers is an unresolved issue (see Criticism). Uber drivers use their own cars although drivers can rent or lease a car to drive with Uber.[21][22][23] Uber offers car rental or leasing via Getaround, Hertz, and Fair[24] and Uber and BYD Auto have a partnership to provide leasing of electric cars to Uber drivers in Chicago and New York City.[25]

The Guardian quoted a driver in March 2019 who said he was earning $3.75 per hour after expenses.[26]. A report published by the Economic Policy Institute in 2018 found the average wage for drivers to be $9.21.[27] Austrian weekly papers Profil and Trend found the hourly wage of drivers to be at €4 and claimed a high incidence of tax evasion, social fraud and circumvention of labour laws by the companies employing drivers on Ubers behalf.[28][29] A 2017 report claimed that only 4 percent of all drivers were still working as such one year after entering the company.[30]

According to Uber, drivers must meet requirements for age, health, car age and type, have a driver's license and a smartphone or tablet, and must pass a background check.[22] In many cities, vehicles used by Uber drivers must pass annual safety inspections and/or must have an Uber emblem posted in the passenger window. Some cities also require Uber drivers to have a business license.[31] A mechanism called "Real-Time ID Check" requires some drivers to occasionally take selfies when logging on to Uber.[32][33]

Drivers use an app to receive and accept offers for transportations and further information. [34]. The Uber driver app includes accommodations for hearing-impaired drivers.[35][36]

Services under development
UberAIR / UberElevate will provide short flights using VTOL aircraft. Demonstration flights are projected to start in 2020 in Dallas and Los Angeles. Commercial operations are projected to begin in 2023.[54] Although technically feasible, the program is expected to encounter safety and regulatory obstacles.[55]
Promotional limited services
Uber has also operated promotional limited services, such as rides of up to 15 minutes each on September 6–8, 2013 in San Francisco in the DeLorean that was featured in the Back to the Future film franchise.[56]

Uber allowed users to hire speedboats in the summer to/from certain points on the coast of Croatia.[57] Uber has also offered transport across Biscayne Bay during Miami Art Week[58][59] and across the Bosporus strait in Istanbul in the summer.[60]

Rating scores
After each journey, the users and drivers must both rate each other on a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Riders and drivers who have low ratings can be deactivated.[61][62] In May 2019, Uber began actively banning riders with low ratings.[63] The company has not defined in detail what will be considered a “below average rating”, but the update is intended to remove users who are unable to improve their behavior.[64]

Other products and services
Uber Eats provides meal delivery from nearby participating restaurants for a fee of approximately $4.[65]
Uber and issuing bank Barclays offer a Visa Inc. credit card that offers customers a cashback reward program and other incentives.[66]
Uber Freight matches freight shippers with truckers in a similar fashion to the matching of taxi passengers with drivers.[67][68]
History
Uber was founded in 2009 as UberCab by Garrett Camp, a computer programmer and the co-founder of StumbleUpon, and Travis Kalanick, who had sold his Red Swoosh startup for $19 million in 2007.[69][70]

On New Year's Eve, after Camp and his friends spent $800 hiring a private driver, Camp wanted to find a way to reduce the cost of direct transportation. He realized that sharing the cost with people could make it affordable, and his idea morphed into Uber. Kalanick joined Camp and gives him "full credit for the idea" of Uber.[71] The first prototype was built by Camp and his friends, Oscar Salazar and Conrad Whelan, with Kalanick being brought on as a "mega advisor" to the company.[71]

Following a beta launch in May 2010, Uber's services and mobile app officially launched in San Francisco in 2011.[72][73] Originally, the application only allowed users to hail a black luxury car and the price was 1.5 times that of a taxi.[74]

In February 2010, Ryan Graves became the first Uber employee, getting the job by responding to a tweet from Kalanick announcing the job opening, and receiving 5–10% of the company. Graves started out as general manager and shortly after the launch was named as CEO.[71] After ten months, in December 2010, Kalanick succeeded Graves as CEO.[71][72][75][76] Graves became the company's chief operating officer (COO).[77]

In 2011, the company changed its name from UberCab to Uber after complaints from San Francisco taxi operators.[78]

The company's early hires included a nuclear physicist, a computational neuroscientist, and a machinery expert who worked on predicting demand for private hire car drivers and where demand is highest.[69][79] In April 2012, in Chicago, Uber launched a service where users were able to request a regular taxi or an Uber driver via its mobile app.[80][81]

In July 2012, the company introduced UberX, a cheaper option that lets people drive for Uber using non-luxury vehicles, subject to a background check, registration requirement, and car standards.[82] At first, rates were similar to those of taxis and were 35% cheaper than UberBLACK.[83] By early 2013, the service was operating in 35 cities.[84] Uber allowed drivers to use their personal vehicles as part of UberX starting in April 2013.[85] Rates were quickly lowered, which caused some dissatisfaction among UberBLACK and taxi drivers, whose earnings decreased as a result of the increased competition at lower rates.[86]

In August 2014, Uber launched UberPOOL, a carpooling service, in the San Francisco Bay Area.[87][88] The service was then launched in other cities worldwide: Paris in November 2014,[89] New York City in December 2014,[90] China in August 2015,[91] Washington, D.C. in October 2015,[92] London in December 2015,[93] the suburbs of Boston in January 2016,[94] Hyderabad, Kolkata Mumbai, and Singapore in June 2016,[95][96] Delaware in September 2016,[97] Toronto (Brampton and Scarborough) in April 2017,[98] Nashville in December 2017,[99] Sydney in April 2018,[100] and Melbourne in June 2018.[101]

In August 2014, Uber launched Uber Eats, a food delivery service.[102][103]

In August 2016, after facing tough competition in China, Uber sold its operations in China to DiDi, in exchange for an 18% stake in Didi.[104] Didi also agreed to invest $1 billion into Uber Global.[105] Uber had started operations in China in 2014, under the name 优步 (yōubù).[106]

In August 2017, Dara Khosrowshahi, the CEO of Expedia which had led an $11M investment in Wingz, became the CEO of Uber.[107][108]

In fall 2017, Uber became a gold member of the Linux Foundation[109] and received a five star privacy rating from the Electronic Frontier Foundation.[110]

In February 2018, Uber combined its operations in Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia and Kazakhstan with those of Yandex.Taxi and invested $225 million in the venture.[111]

In March 2018, Uber merged its services in Southeast Asia with those of Grab in exchange for a 27.5% ownership stake in Grab.[112][113][114]

As of March 2018, men accounted for 62.0% of overall company employment, 51.4% of support staff, and 82.1% of technology-related employment. White people made up 48.6% of the overall employment base and Asian people account for 32.3%. However, for technology-related jobs, White people were 46.3% of employees, while Asian people accounted for 44.7% of employment.[115]

Rent, powered by Getaround, was a peer-to-peer carsharing service available to some users in San Francisco between May 2018 and November 2018.[116]

On May 10, 2019, the company became a public company via an initial public offering underwritten by 30 banks including Morgan Stanley.[117] Following the initial public offering, Uber's shares dropped 11%, resulting in the biggest first-day dollar loss in IPO history for the US.[118] It then posted losses of $1 billion on its first quarter of 2019 in its first earnings report as a public company. A month after going public, both COO Barney Harford and CMO Rebecca Messina stepped down.[119] Uber posted a drastic 5.2 billion USD loss of for the second quarter of 2019. The loss included 3.9 billion USD of "stock-based compensation expenses" related to employee equity delivered as a result of the IPO, and an operating loss of 1.3 billion USD.[120]

Facing continued losses, the marketing department headcount was reduced by a third on July 29, 2019 with the lay-off of 400 people.[121] Engineer hires were frozen as well.[122]

In September 2019, gold city Dubai halted Uber and its UAE-based partner Careem’s riding options, following a decision by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The Uber X and Careem’s Go services were stopped after both pilot projects came to an end.[123]
