Dominic Matteo
Dominic Matteo (born 28 April 1974) is a Scottish former professional footballer. He played as a defender and midfielder in a 17-year professional career from 1992 to 2009. He made a total of 366 league and cup appearances, of which 276 were in the Premier League. He was capped six times by Scotland after originally representing England at under-21 and 'B' team level.
Matteo played for Liverpool, Sunderland, Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City. His most notable individual moment was his goal in the Champions League against A.C. Milan. The latter part of his career was increasingly affected by injuries, which led to his retirement in 2009 at the age of 35. He struggled with gambling addictions and was declared bankrupt in 2015.
Club career
Liverpool
Dominic Matteo was born in Dumfries in 28 April 1974;[1] his father, who "wanted his boy to play like Cesare Maldini",[2] ran Matthew's Cafe in Friars Vennel.[1] His father had Italian heritage, and was a keen follower of European football.[3] The family moved to Southport in late 1978.[4] Matteo was spotted playing for Birkdale United by Liverpool player Kenny Dalglish, who had originally gone to Birkdale United just to watch his son, Paul Dalglish.[5][6] He progressed to a YTS contract at the age of 16.[7] His versatility counted against him, as he was asked to play several positions in the reserve team and subsequently failed to establish himself in one position.[8] However, he impressed enough to win a one-year professional contract at the age of 18.[9] He then signed a new two-year contract in 1993.[10]
He made his Premier League debut for the "Reds" on 23 October 1993, when he replaced an injured John Barnes at left-wing in a 1–1 draw with Manchester City at Maine Road.[11] He made a total of 13 appearances during the 1993–94 season. He joined Mick Buxton's Sunderland on loan in March 1995, but made just one First Division appearance for the "Black Cats", in a 2–0 defeat to Barnsley at Oakwell on 24 March.[12] After the game it transpired that his loan had not been registered in time, leaving him unable to play for Sunderland; though he had technically been an ineligible player against Barnsley, Sunderland escaped with only a £2,500 fine.[13]
He scored two goals for Liverpool, one against Southampton in the Premier League and another against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup.[14][15] After making arguably his biggest impact at Anfield in the 1999–2000 season, Matteo was expected to become a first team regular, but was instead sold to Leeds United[16] in August 2000. He made 155 appearances and scored two goals for Liverpool.[17]
Leeds United
In August 2000 he joined Leeds United despite failing his medical with the club.[18] He made his team debut against A.C. Milan the following month, in a UEFA Champions League contest.[1] He was one of Leeds' best players through their 2000–01 Champions League campaign, in which they achieved a semi-final place.[1] He is fondly remembered by Leeds fans especially for the goal he scored at the San Siro against Milan,[1][19] in the first group stage which ensured they would progress through to the next round. He ended that Champions League campaign with two goals, having also scored earlier against Beşiktaş.[1][20]
When Rio Ferdinand moved to Manchester United in the summer of 2002, Matteo was handed team captaincy.[1] Leeds were relegated at the end of 2003–04, despite Matteo's two goals against Fulham[21] and Wolverhampton Wanderers.[22]
His book, In My Defence, was published in 2011. In an interview, given at the time of the book's release, he said that he had liked working with David O'Leary and Peter Ridsdale at Leeds; " I loved working with David. He had been a great central defender at Arsenal. But, as things started to get on top of us, he spent more time in his office. He was nowhere near a failure and, if you finished fifth now, you would not expect the sack."[23]
Blackburn Rovers
In July 2004, Matteo signed a three-year contract with Blackburn Rovers.[24] He made his Blackburn debut against West Bromwich Albion in a 1–1 draw.[25] He scored his first and only goal for Blackburn in a 3–0 win over Colchester United in the FA Cup.[25]
Stoke City
In January 2007, Matteo moved to Championship side Stoke City on a free transfer.[1] Signing a short-term contract until the summer, he played a total of 10 games and scoring one goal against Derby County.[26] Matteo still continued to play for Stoke during the club's 2007–08 pre-season campaign, despite being out of contract. However, he was offered a new 12-month contract by the club on 10 August 2007. He was made captain by Tony Pulis in the season Stoke won promotion back to the top flight of the English football league system. Matteo played 13 league games up to the end of October after which he played only once more before the end of the season, a game in November 2007.[27] This was the last game of his playing career due to injury.[1]
International career
Matteo won Under-21 and 'B' caps for England, and was also called up for the main squad on two occasions but was never capped.[28][29] He later was called up for the Scotland side, having been born and lived as a young boy in Dumfries.[1] He went on to collect six caps for Scotland, making his debut against Australia in November 2000. After injury problems, he retired from international duty to concentrate on his career at Leeds United.[1]
After playing
While at Stoke Matteo progressed studying for his UEFA coaching qualifications.[30]
In his autobiography and interviews associated with its launch, Matteo admitted having run up over £1,000,000 in gambling debts.[31][32] He recalled betting £200,000 on a single horse race, although that bet won.[31] Matteo was declared bankrupt in 2015.[32][33] His book also repeatedly referenced Matteo being involved in a culture of heavy drinking.[1]
In May 2013, Matteo returned to Leeds United in a new role as a Football Ambassador. He left this position in the summer of 2014 following a change of ownership to Massimo Cellino.[34] In November 2019, Matteo underwent surgery on a brain tumour

Barbarians Rugby
The Barbarian Football Club, usually called the Barbarians and nicknamed the Baa-Baas, is an invitational rugby union team based in Britain. The Barbarians play in black and white hoops, though players wear the socks from their own club strip. Membership is by invitation, and as of 2011, players from 31 countries had played for the Barbarians.[2] Traditionally at least one uncapped player is selected for each match.
The Barbarians traditionally played six annual encounters: Penarth, Cardiff, Swansea and Newport during their Easter Tour; a game with Leicester traditionally on 27 December and the Mobbs Memorial Match against East Midlands in the spring. In 1948, the Barbarians were invited to face Australia as part of the Wallabies' tour of Britain, Ireland and France. Although initially designed as a fund raiser towards the end of the tour, the encounter became a popular and traditional fixture. Initially played every three years, it has become more frequent in the professional era, with the Barbarians now often playing one of the national teams visiting Britain each Autumn.
On 29 May 2011, during halftime of the Barbarians' match against England at Twickenham, the Barbarians and their founder William Percy Carpmael were honoured with induction to the IRB Hall of Fame.[3]
A women's team was established for the first time in 2017. Many invitational clubs are based on the Barbarians, including the French Barbarians, Australian Barbarians, New Zealand Barbarians and South African Barbarians.
History
The Barbarian Club was formed by William Percy Carpmael, who had played rugby for Cambridge University,[4] and had been part of the Cambridge team which had undertaken a tour of Yorkshire in 1884.[5] Inspired by the culture behind short rugby tours he organised his first tour in 1889 with Clapham Rovers,[5] which was followed by an 1890 tour with an invitational team calling themselves the Southern Nomads.[6] At the time practically every club ceased playing in early March and there were no tours and players just 'packed up' until the following season. In 1890 he took the Southern Nomads – mainly composed of players from Blackheath – on a tour of some northern counties of England.
His idea – collecting a touring side from all sources to tackle a few leading clubs in the land – received strong support from leading players, particularly ex-university players. On 8 April 1890, in Leuchters Restaurant and later at the Alexandra Hotel in Bradford, the concept of the Barbarians was agreed upon.[7] The team toured later that year and beat Hartlepool Rovers 9–4 on 27 December in their first fixture.
The team was given the motto by Walter Julius Carey, former Bishop of Bloemfontein and a former member of the Barbarians:
Penarth
The concept took hold over the years and the nearest thing to a club home came to be the Esplanade Hotel at Penarth in South Wales, where the Barbarians always stayed on their Easter tours of Wales.[10] The annual Good Friday game against the Barbarians was the highlight of the Penarth club's year and was always attended by enthusiastic capacity crowds. This fixture marked the start of the Baa-Baas' annual South Wales tour from their "spiritual home" of Penarth, which also included playing Cardiff RFC on the Saturday, Swansea RFC on Easter Monday and Newport RFC on the Tuesday.
The non-match day of Easter Sunday would always see the Barbarians playing golf at the Glamorganshire Golf Club,[11] in Penarth, while the former Esplanade Hotel, which was located on the seafront at Penarth, would host the gala party for the trip, sponsored by Penarth RFC. The first match took place in 1901,[10] and over the next 75 encounters, Penarth won eleven games, drew four and lost 60. Between 1920 and the first Athletics Field game in 1925, the Good Friday games were hosted on Penarth County Grammar School's sports field.
The final Penarth v Barbarians game was played in 1986, by which time the Penarth club had slipped from its prominent position in Welsh rugby. However, a special commemorative game, recognising the 100 years since the first Good Friday match, took place in 2001 and was played at the Athletic Field next to the Penarth clubhouse the day before the Barbarians played Wales at the Millennium Stadium. Gary Teichmann, captain of South Africa and the Barbarians, unveiled a plaque at the clubhouse to mark the event.
The Final Challenge
After the Second World War, in 1948, the Barbarians were asked by the British and Irish unions to raise a side to play the touring Australia side. This started the tradition of the "Final Challenge" – played as the last match in a tour of Britain and Ireland by Australia, New Zealand or South Africa.
'The best try ever scored'
Main article: The greatest try ever scored
The Barbarian 'Final Challenge' match with the All Blacks at Cardiff Arms Park on 27 January 1973 is celebrated as one of the best games of rugby union ever played. It was a game of attack and counterattack, and the Barbarians won the match 23–11, handing the All Blacks their fourth defeat of the tour. Gareth Edwards scored a try widely considered to be one of the best ever in rugby union.
Cliff Morgan described Gareth Edwards' try:
“ Kirkpatrick to Williams. This is great stuff! Phil Bennett covering chased by Alistair Scown. Brilliant, oh, that's brilliant! John Williams, Bryan Williams. Pullin. John Dawes, great dummy. To David, Tom David, the half-way line! Brilliant by Quinnell! This is Gareth Edwards! A dramatic start! What a score!!.....Oh that fellow Edwards....If the greatest writer of the written word would've written that story no one would have believed it. That really was something.[12] ”
Gareth Edwards said of the match:
“ People tend only to remember the first four minutes of the game because of the try, but what they forgot is the great deal of good rugby played afterwards, much of which came from the All Blacks.
For us after the success of the 1971 Lions tour, which captured the imagination of the whole country, it was an opportunity to bring a lot of that
side together again.
”
Traditional matches
The nature of the Barbarians as a touring side made for a diverse fixture list, but at a number of points in the club's history they have settled for a time into a regular pattern. Most of these regular matches have fallen by the wayside, whilst others continue to the present day:
27 December game against Leicester Tigers – this began in 1909 as the third and final match of the Christmas Tour. It was played for the last time as a regular fixture in March 2006[13] but returned in November 2014 when the Barbarians beat Leicester 59-26 in their 125th anniversary season.[14]
The Edgar Mobbs Memorial Match – held for Edgar Mobbs, who was killed in The First World War. Played at Franklins Gardens against Northampton Saints, Bedford Blues or the East Midlands select XV. The first took place on 10 February 1921, and in later years became a tradition on the first Thursday in March. The last Mobbs Match to feature the Barbarians took place in April 2011. Since then, the invited opposition has been a British Army side instead of the Barbarians.[15]
Easter Tour – traditionally four matches against Penarth RFC (Good Friday), Cardiff RFC/Cardiff Blues (Holy Saturday); Swansea RFC (Easter Monday) and Newport RFC (Tuesday following Easter Monday). The Penarth match was dropped after the 1986 match as a regular fixture although in 2001 a special commemorative game, recognising the 100 years since the first Good Friday match, took place in 2001 and was played at the Athletic Field next to the Penarth clubhouse the day before the Barbarians played Wales at the Millennium Stadium. The game against Newport was moved away from Easter after the 1982 fixture due to problems fielding a team for the fourth match of the tour[16] and was played as a midweek game early in the season from September 1982 onwards.[17] The Barbarians last played Newport in November 1996.
The Final Challenge — played as the last match in a tour of the UK by Australia, New Zealand or South Africa. Initially played every three years, these games have become more frequent in the professional era. The fixture on 3 December 2008 between the Barbarians and Australia was played at Wembley Stadium, the first rugby union match played there since its redevelopment.
Remembrance Day game against the Combined Services, played in November. The fixture was first played in 1997 and the most recent game, in 2014, resulted in a 31-15 win for the Barbarians.[18]
They typically compete against teams from the home nations (England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland) as well as other international sides. Other matches are played against club teams, often to celebrate anniversaries. The 2014-15 fixture list included matches against Leicester Tigers and Heriot's Rugby Club in addition to the Final Challenge game with Australia and the annual Combined Services match.[19] The Heriot's game celebrated the 125th anniversary of both that club and the Barbarians,[20] while the Leicester game was also part of the Barbarians' 125th anniversary schedule.[21] The Barbarians were also invited to play in the first ever Rugby match at the London Olympic Stadium in 2015 against Samoa.
Olympic rugby union centenary celebration match
Australia was approached by the British Olympic Association to play the Barbarians at Wembley Stadium on 3 December 2008. The match formed part of the BOA's programme of events to celebrate the centenary of the first London Olympic Games where Australia defeated a Great Britain (Cornwall) side in the final 32 – 3.[22] In 1908 France were the defending Olympic champions, but when they withdrew from the event, leaving just Australia and Great Britain to contest the gold medal, it was then County champions Cornwall who took to the field to represent the host nation. Cornwall had already been defeated in Australia's earlier 31-match tour. Cornwall's 1908 contribution was also further recognised by the presentation of the Cornwall Cup to the winning 2008 captain at Wembley, with the players of the respective sides receiving gold or silver commemorative medals. The 2008 game was the first rugby union fixture to take place in the new Wembley Stadium.[23] Australia went on to win 18 points to 11.
In a change to the tradition of the Barbarians players wearing their own club socks, in this game, they all wore Cornwall's black and gold socks. The break with the tradition was highly regarded by the secretary of the Cornwall Rugby Football Union, Alan Mitchell, who was said to have been humbled by the honour.[23]
Women's team
In October 2017 a women's team was announced for the first time in the club's history.[24] Their first match was a 19-0 victory against Munster on 10 November 2017, played as part of a double header with the men's team playing Tonga.[25]
They subsequently played a match against the British Army in March 2018, winning 37-0.[26]
Their first-ever match against international competition saw six tries scored in a 34-33 victory against the USA at Infinity Park in the Denver suburb of Glendale, Colorado.[27][28] On 2 June, 2019, Barbarians Women will take on England at Twickenham as the prelude to Barbarian F.C.'s match against the England men

Halsey
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane (/ˌfrændʒɪˈpɑːni/ FRAN-jih-PAH-nee;[2][Note 1] born September 29, 1994), known professionally as Halsey (/ˈhɔːlzi/ HAWL-zee),[3] is an American singer and songwriter. Gaining attention from self-released music on social media platforms, she was signed by Astralwerks in 2014 and released her debut EP, Room 93, later that year.
Halsey's debut studio album, Badlands (2015), was certified Platinum by the RIAA, along with four of its singles. In 2016, she rose to stronger prominence as a featured vocalist on The Chainsmokers' single "Closer", which topped the charts of over fifteen countries and was later certified Diamond in the US. Her second studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom (2017), consisted of more "radio friendly" music than her previous releases. It topped the Billboard 200 and featured two US top-20 singles: "Now or Never" and "Bad at Love". Halsey's upcoming third studio album, Manic, is expected to be released in 2020. Its lead single, "Without Me", became her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist.
Halsey has sold 22 million records in the US alone, based on certifications alone. Her awards and nominations include four Billboard Music Awards, one GLAAD Media Award, a Guinness World Record, a MTV Video Music Award and a Grammy Award nomination. Halsey is noted for her distinctive singing voice. Her music is categorized as indie pop ballads, usually based on her personal experiences. Outside of her career, she has been involved in suicide prevention awareness and sexual assault victim advocacy.
Early life
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane was born on September 29, 1994, in Edison, New Jersey.[4] Her parents dropped out of college after her mother discovered that she was pregnant with her.[5] Her mother, Nicole, works for security in a hospital, and her father, Chris, manages a car dealership.[6][7] Nicole is of Italian, Hungarian, and Irish descent, while Chris is African-American with some Irish ancestry.[8][9] Frangipane has two younger brothers, Sevian and Dante.[5] She played the violin, viola, and cello, until moving on to the acoustic guitar when she was 14 years old.[10]
Throughout her childhood Frangipane's family moved frequently, as her parents worked many jobs. By the time she reached her teen years she had enrolled in six schools.[11] In high school, Frangipane endured bullying by other students,[7][12][13] and at 17 she attempted suicide, which led to a 17-day hospitalization. Following this, she was diagnosed as bipolar; her mother also struggles with the disorder.[14][15] She began using recreational drugs soon after, claiming her bipolar disorder caused her to become an "unconventional child".[11] Also, when she was 17, she became romantically involved with a man who was 24 and lived on the Halsey Street in Brooklyn. Frangipane said, "That's where I first starting writing music and where I started to feel like I was a part of something bigger than my town in middle of nowhere New Jersey. Halsey is kind of like a manifestation of all the exaggerated parts of me, so it's like an alter ego."[16] In 2012, she graduated from Warren Hills Regional High School in Washington, New Jersey.[17]
After graduating, Frangipane enrolled in the Rhode Island School of Design; however, she withdrew due to financial hardship and attended community college instead.[5] She eventually dropped out of community college and was ejected from her home, saying, "They just didn't agree with a lot of things about me". Soon after, she lived in a basement in lower Manhattan with a group of "degenerate stoners" whom she knew through her then-boyfriend.[18] When she was not living there, she occasionally lived in one of New York's many homeless shelters, and she considered prostitution as a way to make money.[19][20] When describing this period of her life, Frangipane said, "I remember one time I had $9 in my bank account, and bought a four-pack of Red Bull and used it to stay up overnight over the course of two or three days, because it was less dangerous to not sleep than it was to sleep somewhere random and maybe get raped or kidnapped." She would occasionally stay with her maternal grandmother.[5]
Career
2012–2014: Career beginnings
Frangipane started writing music when she was 17, and in 2012 she began posting videos to social media sites such as YouTube and Kik, and in particular Tumblr, under the username of se7enteenblack.[21] She became known for a parody of Taylor Swift's song "I Knew You Were Trouble", inspired by Swift's relationship with Harry Styles. She then wrote a follow up song about their relationship which was posted online in early 2013.[22][23] In early 2014, Frangipane went to a party and met a "music guy" who asked her to collaborate on a song with him because he liked her voice. The result, a song about her ex-boyfriend titled "Ghost", was posted by Frangipane on SoundCloud several weeks after it was recorded. Within hours, the song gained online popularity, and she was subsequently contacted by several record labels, with the song eventually charting and going on radio. She signed with Astralwerks, feeling that they gave her more creative freedom than other labels that contacted her.[5]
Following this, Frangipane played numerous acoustic shows in different cities under several stage names.[24] She chose Halsey as her permanent stage name because it is an anagram of her first name, and is also a reference to the Halsey Street station of the New York City Subway in Brooklyn,[a] a place she spent a lot of time at when she was a teenager.[25] She also stated Halsey was the most popular name she used.[26] Having written poems for years, Halsey began writing more serious songs as a way to promote them. Music became Halsey's "confessional approach" and a form of therapy after the difficult life she had endured.[5]
2014–2016: Badlands and breakthrough
Halsey began touring with The Kooks in August 2014 and performed various original songs.[27] She released her debut extended play, Room 93, on October 27, 2014.[28] The EP charted in the lower regions of the US Billboard 200 and at number three on the Top Heatseekers chart.[29] She then began work on her debut studio album and performed songs from the upcoming album at South by Southwest in 2015, where she was the most tweeted about performer of the night.[30] She embarked on a co-headlining tour with Young Rising Sons in March, and in June, she became the opening act for Imagine Dragons on their Smoke + Mirrors Tour (2015) during the North American leg.[31]
Halsey's debut studio album, Badlands, was released on August 28, 2015. She described Badlands as a concept album about a dystopian future society known as "The Badlands", which was a metaphor for her mental state at the time, stating that each song meant something different to her.[32][33] Halsey wrote all of the songs on the album when she was 19, while production was handled by a number of producers, including then boyfriend, Norwegian producer Lido.[34] The album was described by Halsey as not having a "proper radio hit".[19] It received positive reviews from music critics,[35][36] with Joe Levy of Rolling Stone citing Halsey as a "new Tumblr popstar with a knack for sticky imagery".[37] Badlands debuted at number two on the in the US, selling 115,000 copies in its first week, of which 97,000 were pure album sales.[38] The album found success in several other countries, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, where the album debuted in the top three.[39][40][41] It was further promoted by Halsey's Badlands Tour (2015–16), and her spot as the opening act for select dates of The Weekend's The Madness Fall Tour (2015).[42]
Badlands was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for U.S. sales of 1,000,000 units.[43] Four singles were released from the album: "Ghost", "New Americana", "Colors", and "Castle", all of which were certified Platinum in the US.[44] The latter three singles achieved minor commercial success; "New Americana" reached number 60 on the US Billboard Hot 100,[45] "Colors" became the album's most streamed track on Spotify and was certified Silver in the UK,[46] and "Castle" was rerecorded for the soundtrack of the 2016 film The Huntsman: Winter's War.[47] "Gasoline" was not released as a single and was only included on the deluxe version of Badlands, but became one of the album's most popular tracks; it is the album's third most streamed track on Spotify,[46] and was certified Platinum in the US
Halsey was featured on the song "The Feeling" by Justin Bieber for his fourth studio album, Purpose (2015).[48][49] The song was not officially released, though entered the top forty of the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Gold in the US and Silver in the UK.[50] In February 2016, she was one of four female performers to partner with MAC cosmetics for their Future Forward line; Halsey released a lipstick named after herself.[51] The Senior Vice President and Group Creative Director of the company, James Gager, said "It feels like a great thing to be able to support artists who are breaking through but aren't necessarily at the top top, to push them forward."[52] In May 2016, Halsey released the song "Tokyo Narita (Freestyle)", produced by Lido.[53][54] The song was a standalone track that served as a promotional single from Halsey.[54] In July 2016, Halsey collaborated with 26 other artists for the charity single "Hands", which was a tribute for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.[55][56]
On July 29, 2016, Halsey was featured as a vocalist on The Chainsmokers' single "Closer," a song she also cowrote.[57][58] The song achieved major commercial success; it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 12 consecutive weeks, topped the charts of 12 other countries, sold more than 15 million units worldwide, and is one of most streamed songs on Spotify.[59] The official lyric video for "Closer" was released on YouTube on July 29, 2016, and has since garnered over two billion views.[60] Billboard noted Halsey's solo verse as a favorable part of the song, and the song earned her a Grammy Award nomination for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
2017–2018: Hopeless Fountain Kingdom
Halsey announced work on her second studio album prior to the release of Badlands, with progress on the record continuing throughout 2016 and 2017.[63] In January 2017, she released the single "Not Afraid Anymore"; it appears on the soundtrack of the film Fifty Shades Darker (2017).[64] "Now or Never" was released on April 4 as the lead single from her second studio album, and because it preceded the release of her second studio album, it was released as an instant grat with the album's pre-order.[65] The song debuted at number 52 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and later peaked at number 17. It was certified 2x Platinum by the RIAA.[66] "Now or Never" also reached the top 20 of Australia and Malaysia, and sold 500,000 units outside of the US.[67][68] Two promotional singles were also made available prior to the release of the album: "Eyes Closed" and "Strangers"'.[69]
Halsey released her second studio album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, on June 2.[70] The album consisted of more "radio friendly" songs in comparison to her previous work, which she attributed to her desire to prove she was "more than capable" of creating "radio-ready" music.[71] Much like her debut album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is a concept album that revolves around a pair of lovers in a tale based on Romeo and Juliet; the project was inspired by her breakup with Lido.[72] The album also focuses on Halsey's bisexuality and on bisexual characters.[73][74][75] Hopeless Fountain Kingdom debuted atop the Billboard 200 and the Canadian Albums Chart. First week sales in the US were of 106,000 equivalent album units, with 76,000 being pure album sales. Similar to her debut album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom was certified Platinum by the RIAA.[76] Due to the album reaching number one, Halsey became the first woman to achieve a number one album in the US in 2017.[77] To promote the album, Halsey embarked on the Hopeless Fountain Kingdom World Tour, which began on September 29, 2017, her twenty-third birthday.[78] Halsey also performed surprise DJ sets at Emo Nite in Los Angeles in 2017.[79]
The second single from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, "Bad at Love", was released on August 22. The song peaked at number five in the US, which made it her highest peak as a lead artist at the time.[80] It was certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA, and sold more than 300,000 records outside the US.[81][82][83] In December, Halsey's collaboration with then boyfriend G-Eazy "Him & I" was released, and later peaked at number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100,[84] and was certified 2x Platinum by RIAA.[85] The song also reached the top ten of 13 other countries' charts.[86] In mid 2017 she collaborated with the band Thirty Seconds to Mars on the song "Love Is Madness" for their album America

It was released as the third and final single from Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, and in April she released its music video.[89] "Alone" was certified Platinum by RIAA and reached number one on Billboard's Dance Club chart, though only peaked at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100.[81][90] Halsey sang with Khalid for Benny Blanco's debut single "Eastside", which was released on July 12, along with a music video discussing various parts of Halsey's life.[91][92] The song peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the charts of five other countries.[93] It was certified 2x Platinum in the US, and sold over one million units outside the country.[94] Also this year she appeared in two films: she voiced Wonder Woman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, and cameoed as herself in A Star Is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper.[95][96][97] Halsey was also a key advisor on the U.S. version of The Voice in its fifteenth season.[98]
2018–present: Manic
On October 4, Halsey released a single titled "Without Me".[99][100] "Without Me" is her "first solo-record since 2017." She stated that this song is also very personal to her.[101][102] On October 29, the official music video for "Without Me" was released, featuring a "G-Eazy lookalike" following their second breakup.[103][104] This song went on to become Halsey's most successful single as a lead artist to date, becoming her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. It topped the chart for two non-consecutive weeks and remained in the top five for 22 weeks.[105] It also reached the top three of the UK, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland. The song has been certified 3x Platinum in the US, Platinum in the UK, and 5x Platinum in Australia and Canada.[106] Due to "Without Me" reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Halsey became the eighth woman to achieve multiple number ones on the chart during the 2010s.[107]
Halsey released or was featured on various collaborations during the first several months of 2019, including a remix of "Without Me" featuring American rapper Juice WRLD on January 9,[108] the song "11 Minutes" with Yungblud (featuring Travis Barker) on February 14[109] and accompanying music video on February 22,[110] and the song "Boy with Luv" by BTS on April 12, the music video for which became the most–viewed music video within the first 24 hours on YouTube with 74.6 million views.[111] On April 19, she and 29 other musical acts were featured on the Lil Dicky song "Earth," a charity single about climate change awareness.[112]

The singer will play 19 shows during the first leg, scheduled to take place in Europe between February and March 2020.[119] She released another single, "Clementine", on her birthday, September 29, 2019.[120]
Artistry
Influences
As Halsey grew up, her mother listened to The Cure, Alanis Morissette, and Nirvana, while her father listened to The Notorious B.I.G., Slick Rick, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, and 2Pac. She said their music taste has been a great influence on her.[25] Halsey called Panic! at the Disco the "band that changed [her] fucking life"[121] and credits Lady Gaga for giving her the strength to be herself.[122] Halsey mentioned a Long Island rock band, Brand New, as both an influence and a favorite of hers, once changing her biography on Instagram to "the devil and God are raging inside me", a reference to their third album.[123] Her other influences include Marilyn Manson, Beck,[124] Kanye West,[125] The Weeknd,[126] Amy Winehouse,[127] and Bright Eyes.[128]
Halsey has said "There's plenty of musicians that I love and respect, but I think that I'm the most inspired by cinema."[129] Filmmakers who have influenced her include Quentin Tarantino, Harmony Korine, and Larry Clark.[129]
Music style and themes
Halsey is noted for her distinctive "indie" style of singing,[130][131][132] which has garnered controversial feedback.[133][134][135] She sings with an "accent" different from her speaking voice.[136] She is a pop,[137][138][139] electropop,[138][140][141][142] synth-pop,[143][144] art pop,[141] alternative pop,[142][145] R&B,[137] and indie pop artist.[146] The New York Times' Jon Caramanica noted, "Halsey arrived as part of a slew of female pop rebels who emerged in the wake of Lorde's early-2010s recalibration of the genre's operating hierarchies."[147] When speaking of Badlands, Billboard stated, "Halsey's larger-than-life vision combines the synthy darkness of Lorde, the neon-pop chutzpah of Miley Cyrus and the flickering film noir of Lana Del Rey."[148]
Halsey's music focuses on her personal experiences and telling a story.[149][150] She writes about relationships with other women in her music as a way of solidifying her bisexuality.[151]
Videos and stage
The biggest influence on her live performances is Adam Lazzara, the frontman of Taking Back Sunday,[152] as she said, "One of the most inspiring things I've ever seen is watching [Taking Back Sunday] live and watching Adam use that microphone as a prop and I thought yep, I'm gonna do that."[128]
Public image
In her early career, Halsey drew criticism for pre-fame Tweets that were posted from 2009-2012,[153] and also gained controversy for allegedly calling herself "tri-bi" in an interview, due to her being biracial, bipolar, and bisexual; however, she stated the label is a trivializing way to describe her and condemned the label as a misquote.[153] She became most known for her signature dyed blue hair in her early career.[154] She drew controversy in 2016 after several fan interactions, some involving Halsey kissing underage fans.[155]
In June 2017, Halsey received backlash for collaborating with Quavo, an artist who has made homophobic remarks. She stated that she has never spoken to Quavo, and continued to say that she wouldn't put "a lot of people" on her songs. She criticized Iggy Azalea for her "complete disregard for black culture".[156] She also criticized Demi Lovato for, in Halsey's view, treating bisexuality as taboo in the song "Cool for the Summer."[157]
Halsey has described herself as an "in-between role model," and an "inconvenient woman" due to her music and style.[158][159] She stated in 2017 that although she passes as white, she is a black woman and proud of her heritage.[160][161][162][163] She has appeared on the cover of magazines such as Forbes 30 Under 30, Billboard, Paper, and Playboy.[164] She has appeared in advertisements for Jeep, Beats Electronics, and ModCloth.[165][166][167] She has been described a feminist icon.[168] She has also been called the "voice of her generation".[169] Her relationship with G-Eazy gathered significant media attention due to rumors of drug usage, arrest, cheating, and G-Eazy's feuds with other artists.[170][171]
Halsey has long identified as an alternative artist, stating that she can do pop collaborations without being considered a pop artist, similar to Kendrick Lamar. She states that she is only classified as pop because she is a woman.[172] Some of her music is still labeled pop while some is considered alternative.[173] In 2019, she called herself "the anti-popstar" and stated she doesn't care how people identify her music, as long as it connects to people.[174]
Activism
During the 2016 USA presidential election, Halsey was an avid supporter of Bernie Sanders and urged her fans to vote for him.[175] In July 2016, she and 26 other artists were featured on the charity single "Hands", which was a tribute for the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting.[55][56]
As a result of her own attempted suicide at age 17,[5][176] Halsey participated in the mental health and suicide prevention awareness campaign called "I'm Listening", which was hosted by radio network Entercom and broadcast live on September 10, 2017.[177]
Halsey is a feminist.[168] After the 2017 Women's March, Halsey sent out a tweet that promised to donate one dollar to Planned Parenthood for every retweet it received.[178] She ended up donating $100,000 to Planned Parenthood.[178] Halsey delivered a speech to more than 200,000 protesters at the 2018 Women's March.[179][180] Instead of a traditional speech, Halsey performed a five-minute poem titled "A Story Like Mine", in which she told personal stories of sexual assault and violence throughout her life.[179] Her personal narrative included accompanying her best friend to Planned Parenthood after she had been raped, her personal account of sexual assault by neighbors and boyfriends, and women sexually assaulted by Olympic doctor Larry Nassar.[181] She completed her speech by requesting all—"Black, Asian, poor, wealthy, trans, cis, Muslim, Christian"—sexual assault victims to listen and support each other.[181] A. J. Willingham of CNN opined in a headline that "Halsey's Women's March speech moved people around the world."[182] In March 2018, Halsey protested alongside numerous other celebrities at March for Our Lives in Washington, D.C..[183] In May 2018 Halsey attacked Ivanka Trump over Twitter, complaining that she was too relaxed while her father hurt immigrant children.[184]
In November 2018 Halsey performed at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, along numerous other artists,[185] but in December she called out the company for its lack of inclusion of transgender models in its various shows, stating "as a member of the LGBT+ community, I have no tolerance for a lack of inclusivity. Especially not motivated by stereotype."[186][187] Later that month, she performed her hit song "Without Me" on The Voice and received backlash for "sensually" dancing with backup dancer Jade Chynoweth. Many called the backlash homophobic and Halsey defended her performance.[188][189] In a January 2019 interview with Glamour, she advocated for a stronger presence of women in music.[190] In April 2019, she and 29 other musical acts were featured on the charity single "Earth", which raises climate change awareness.[112]
Personal life
Relationships
Halsey is openly bisexual.[151] From 2015 to 2016, Halsey dated Norwegian producer Lido, who helped produce Badlands and inspired Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.[191]
In 2017, she began dating American rapper G-Eazy. They met at a party in 2017 and although they pursued different music, they found common ground for their collaboration "Him & I", which discussed their love and lifestyle.[192] The couple broke up in July 2018; their relationship was off and on again until September when the relationship was officially over.[193] Halsey confirmed in a 2019 interview with Glamour that her October 2018 single "Without Me" is partially about their relationship.[194]
She began dating English alternative rock musician Yungblud in November 2018.[195] They met at a bar in Los Angeles which remains a secret,[196] they discussed different topics including music, and ended up collaborating on "11 Minutes",[197][198] and were rumored to be in a romantic relationship. Halsey first confirmed their relationship in an interview with Capital FM in March and celebrated his birthday in August.[199][200][201] In September they broke up.[202]
Halsey is currently in a relationship with actor Evan Peters.[203][204]
Personal health
Since the beginning of her career, Halsey has been open about her personal health; in 2015, speaking of her career, she stated "I'm just this fucked-up stoner kid who made it".[5]
Halsey has bipolar disorder. She was diagnosed with this mental disorder at the age of 17, and said that her mother also has it.[205] At that age, Halsey attempted to commit suicide, which is what led to her diagnosis and a 17-day admission to a psychiatric hospital.[206][5] It was not long after her suicide attempt that Halsey began having success in the music industry. She said that singing and performing has helped her manage the symptoms she experiences from having bipolar disorder.[207] Despite the struggles Halsey has faced as a result of this mood disorder, she said that she embraces being bipolar because it makes her "really empathetic".[205]
Halsey was diagnosed with endometriosis in 2016 and went public with it on her Twitter account.[208][209] Halsey accredits a miscarriage she experienced in 2015 to her endometriosis, originally stating in 2016 that it was due to her hectic touring schedule.[210][206][211] Only hours after Halsey realized she was having a miscarriage, she went on stage to perform during a tour because she did not want to hurt her career by missing a performance.[212] Halsey chronicled her struggles with endometriosis on the talk show The Doctors in April 2018, where she revealed she was going to freeze her eggs.[210]
Also in 2018, Halsey spoke out about her endometriosis and the pain it causes at the Blossom Ball, which is run by the Endometriosis Foundation of America.[213] At the Blossom Ball, she said, "Sometimes I'm bloated, I'm on an I.V., I'm sick, I'm on medicine, and I'm backstage, terrified that I'm going to bleed through my clothes in the middle of my show."[213] She told people who attended this event that she wanted to speak out because the media often portrays her as having perfect physical health despite her struggle with endometriosis.[213] In January 2017, Halsey underwent surgery in an attempt to lessen the pain caused by the disorder.[214] Halsey has not disclosed what type of surgery she underwent.[206]
On July 29, 2019, Halsey tweeted "the best gift I ever got in life was Cheerios being gluten free", which prompted a fan to ask her if she was gluten free, she responded saying that she was gluten intolerant and within less than two minutes of consuming food containing gluten, her stomach swells up to the comparison of looking 6 months pregnant.[215][216][217]
On August 14, 2019, Halsey revealed on Twitter that she quit smoking cigarettes after 10 years.[218]

Early life
Ashley Nicolette Frangipane was born on September 29, 1994, in Edison, New Jersey.[4] Her parents dropped out of college after her mother discovered that she was pregnant with her.[5] Her mother, Nicole, works for security in a hospital, and her father, Chris, manages a car dealership.[6][7] Nicole is of Italian, Hungarian, and Irish descent, while Chris is African-American with some Irish ancestry.[8][9] Frangipane has two younger brothers, Sevian and Dante.[5] She played the violin, viola, and cello, until moving on to the acoustic guitar when she was 14 years old.[10]
Throughout her childhood Frangipane's family moved frequently, as her parents worked many jobs.

To the Movies, and cameoed as herself in A Star Is Born, directed by Bradley Cooper.[95][96][97] Halsey was also a key advisor on the U.S. version of The Voice in its fifteenth season.[98]

She stated that this song is also very personal to her.[101][102] On October 29, the official music video for "Without Me" was released, featuring a "G-Eazy lookalike" following their second breakup.[103][104] This song went on to become Halsey's most successful single as a lead artist to date, becoming her first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100. It topped the chart for two non-consecutive weeks and remained in the top five for 22 weeks.[105] It also reached the top three of the UK, Malaysia, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Ireland. Artistry
