Jagmeet Singh

Jagmeet Singh

Jagmeet Singh Dhaliwal[2] MP (born January 2, 1979), professionally known as Jagmeet Singh (/dʒəɡˈmiːt sɪŋ/ jəg-MEET SING), is a Canadian lawyer and politician serving as leader of the New Democratic Party since 2017 and as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the riding of Burnaby South since 2019.  He was previously an Ontario New Democratic Party Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Bramalea—Gore—Malton in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 2011 to 2017.

Singh began his career as a criminal defence lawyer. His political career began in 2011 where he contested the 2011 federal election in the federal riding of Bramalea—Gore—Malton which resulted in a narrow victory for Conservative opponent Bal Gosal;  he became MPP in the overlapping provincial riding later that year.  In 2015, he became deputy leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party, serving under leader Andrea Horwath until 2017. Singh announced his candidacy for the federal New Democratic Party leadership following a leadership review that resulted in a leadership election to replace Tom Mulcair. Singh was elected leader on October 1, 2017, with a first round vote of 53.8% in a field of four. In the 2019 federal election, the New Democrats under Singh won 24 seats and dropped from third party to fourth party status.

Upon his election, Singh became the first person of a visible minority group to lead a major Canadian federal political party on a permanent basis, and the second overall after the Bloc Québécois’s former interim leader Vivian Barbot. Singh is also the first turban-wearing Sikh to sit as a provincial legislator in Ontario. He has been widely recognized in Canadian media for his fashion and style sense.  Ideologically, Singh identifies as both a progressive and a social democrat.  He advocates raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, decriminalizing personal possession of all drugs, and supports eliminating several tax deductions available to the highest-income earners.  On June 17, 2020, Singh was removed from the House of Commons after refusing to apologize after calling a Bloc Québécois MP 'racist
Singh was born on January 2, 1979, in Scarborough, Ontario, to Harmeet Kaur and Jagtaran Singh,  immigrant parents from the Indian state of Punjab. His mother is from Ghudani Khurd, in Punjab's Ludhiana district, while his father is from Thikriwala, in Barnala district.  His great-grandfather was Sewa Singh Thikriwala, a revolutionary who fought against British occupation in India.  Another of Jagmeet's great-grandfathers is Hira Singh, who served in World War I and World War II in the Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army.  After a year as a toddler living with his grandparents in India, Singh spent his early childhood in St. John's and Grand Falls-Windsor, both in Newfoundland and Labrador, before relocating with his family to Windsor, Ontario.  Singh has publicly discussed suffering sexual abuse as a child, as well as having a father who was alcoholic and abusive.
From Grade 6 to 12, Singh attended Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, Michigan.  Singh went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Western Ontario in 2001 and a Bachelor of Laws degree from York University's Osgoode Hall Law School in 2005. He was called to the Bar of the Law Society of Upper Canada in 2006.
Singh has two younger siblings, brother Gurratan and sister Manjot, who were both born during the family's time in Newfoundland.[20] Gurratan, who is also a lawyer and politician, has been described as Jagmeet's "secret weapon"  Gurratan Singh was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2018 Ontario election, representing the riding of Brampton East.
Singh worked as a criminal defence lawyer in the Greater Toronto Area before entering politics, first at the law firm Pinkofskys, then at his own practice, Singh Law, which he established with Gurratan.  During his time as a lawyer he offered free legal rights seminars across Ontario and provided pro bono legal counsel for people and community organizations in need. In a Toronto Star article published January 9, 2012, Singh stated that his background in criminal defence contributed to his decision to enter politics, particularly his work advocating for the protection of rights entrenched in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms

UN Security Council

UN Security Council

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN),  charged with ensuring international peace and security, recommending the admission of new UN members to the General Assembly,  and approving any changes to the UN Charter.  Its powers include establishing peacekeeping operations, enacting international sanctions, and authorizing military action. The UNSC is the only UN body with the authority to issue binding resolutions on member states.

Like the UN as a whole, the Security Council was created after World War II to address the failings of the League of Nations in maintaining world peace. It held its first session on 17 January 1946, and in the ensuing decades was largely paralyzed by the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union and their respective allies. Nevertheless it authorized military interventions in the Korean War and the Congo Crisis and peacekeeping missions in the Suez Crisis, Cyprus, and West New Guinea. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, UN peacekeeping efforts increased dramatically in scale, with the Security Council authorizing major military and peacekeeping missions in Kuwait, Namibia, Cambodia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Security Council consists of fifteen members, of which five are permanent:  China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. These were the great powers, or their successor states, that were the victors of World War II. Permanent members can veto any substantive resolution, including those on the admission of new member states or nominees for the office of Secretary-General. The remaining ten members are elected on a regional basis to serve a term of two years. The body's presidency rotates monthly among its members.

Resolutions of the Security Council are typically enforced by UN peacekeepers, military forces voluntarily provided by member states and funded independently of the main UN budget. As of March 2019, there are thirteen peacekeeping missions with over 81,000 personnel from 121 countries, with a total budget of nearly $6.7 billion.
In the century prior to the UN's creation, several international treaty organizations and conferences had been formed to regulate conflicts between nations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907.  Following the catastrophic loss of life in World War I, the Paris Peace Conference established the League of Nations to maintain harmony between the nations.  This organization successfully resolved some territorial disputes and created international structures for areas such as postal mail, aviation, and opium control, some of which would later be absorbed into the UN.  However, the League lacked representation for colonial peoples (then half the world's population) and significant participation from several major powers, including the US, USSR, Germany, and Japan; it failed to act against the 1931 Japanese invasion of Manchuria, the Second Italo-Ethiopian War in 1935, the 1937 Japanese occupation of China, and Nazi expansions under Adolf Hitler that escalated into World War II
The earliest concrete plan for a new world organization began under the aegis of the US State Department in 1939.  US President Roosevelt first coined the term United Nations to describe the Allied countries. "On New Year's Day 1942, President Roosevelt, Prime Minister Churchill, Maxim Litvinov, of the USSR, and T. V. Soong, of China, signed a short document which later came to be known as the United Nations Declaration and the next day the representatives of twenty-two other nations added their signatures."  The term United Nations was first officially used when 26 governments signed this Declaration. By 1 March 1945, 21 additional states had signed.  "Four Policemen" was coined to refer to the four major Allied countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, the Soviet Union, and China.  and became the foundation of an executive branch of the United Nations, the Security Council.

In mid-1944, the delegations from the Allied "Big Four", the Soviet Union, the UK, the US and China, met for the Dumbarton Oaks Conference in Washington, D.C. to negotiate the UN's structure,  and the composition of the UN Security Council quickly became the dominant issue. France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the UK, and US were selected as permanent members of the Security Council; the US attempted to add Brazil as a sixth member, but was opposed by the heads of the Soviet and British delegations  The most contentious issue at Dumbarton and in successive talks proved to be the veto rights of permanent members. The Soviet delegation argued that each nation should have an absolute veto that could block matters from even being discussed, while the British argued that nations should not be able to veto resolutions on disputes to which they were a party. At the Yalta Conference of February 1945, the American, British, and Russian delegations agreed that each of the "Big Five" could veto any action by the council, but not procedural resolutions, meaning that the permanent members could not prevent debate on a resolution.

On 25 April 1945, the UN Conference on International Organization began in San Francisco, attended by 50 governments and a number of non-governmental organizations involved in drafting the United Nations Charter.  At the conference, H. V. Evatt of the Australian delegation pushed to further restrict the veto power of Security Council permanent members.  Due to the fear that rejecting the strong veto would cause the conference's failure, his proposal was defeated twenty votes to ten.

The UN officially came into existence on 24 October 1945 upon ratification of the Charter by the five then-permanent members of the Security Council and by a majority of the other 46 signatories.  On 17 January 1946, the Security Council met for the first time at Church House, Westminster, in London, United Kingdom

Belle Delphine

Belle Delphine

Mary-Belle Kirschner (born 23 October 1999), better known online as Belle Delphine, is a South African-born English internet personality, model, and YouTuber. She is most notable for her glamour and cosplay modeling on Instagram. Her posts on the platform featured a risqué and self-proclaimed "weird" aesthetic, and were often influenced by popular Internet memes and trends. As a result of her online activity, she became an Internet meme in her own right.

In the summer of 2019, Kirschner registered a joke Pornhub account and began selling her "GamerGirl Bath Water" product through her online store, garnering her a great amount of media coverage online. Shortly after, her Instagram account was deleted due to community guideline violations. Media outlets have described Kirschner as a cross between an Internet troll and a performance artist, as well as an e-girl. Kirschner has also been cited as an influence on the e-girl aesthetic commonly adopted by TikTok users.
Kirschner was born on 23 October 1999 in South Africa, and eventually moved to the United Kingdom.  Kirschner has had an Instagram account since 2015,  and in July 2016, she registered a YouTube account.  In August 2016, Kirschner uploaded a makeup tutorial video, demonstrating how to do a cat-eye.

In 2018, Kirschner began to regularly upload pictures of her modeling on Instagram, which had a distinct, self-proclaimed "weird elf kitty girl" aesthetic, and she used accessories such as pink wigs, thigh-high stockings, and cat ears.  She also regularly produced cosplay-related content,  which included characters such as Harley Quinn and D.Va.  In March 2018, Kirschner launched a Patreon account, where supporters could pledge a monthly donation and receive access to self-described "lewd" photosets.  At one point, her content garnered over 4,400 supporters on the website.  Polygon noted that one follower spent $2,500 in exchange for a personal Skype conversation with Kirschner.  In September, she uploaded a second YouTube video featuring her giving a tour of her pastel pink room, while wearing fake braces and thigh-high stockings.  Rolling Stone noted that her style in this second video is more in-line with that of the one she later adopted during her rise to prominence on Instagram, which they described as "alien Disney princess porn star."

Once she adopted this new online aesthetic, her Instagram account surged from 850,000 followers in November 2018 to 4.2 million in July 2019.  Her content also began to notably and frequently include ahegao facial expressions, which are exaggerated, eyes-rolled-back expressions that signify an orgasm, often featured in adult anime.  Complex further described the nature of Kirschner's content, detailing that "along with her more traditional photos, she has posted clips of herself coyly eating a raw egg, shell and all. A scroll through her feed is just as likely to find colorful thirst traps as it is to see photos of her playing with a dead octopus."  As she grew in popularity on the platform, Kirschner began to draw controversy for her content. In January 2019, adult content creator Indigo White alleged that while underage, Kirschner used other sex workers' nude photos and represented them as her own.  A February video, which showed Kirschner dancing to a song about suicide while holding a gun, also drew controversy.  Shortly after it was posted, false rumors of her death began to circulate online
