Liga MX

 Liga MX

The Liga MX (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈliɣa ˈeme ˈekis]) (Liga BBVA MX for sponsorship reasons with BBVA through its Mexican subsidiary BBVA México),  is the top professional football division of the Mexican football league system. Administered by the Mexican Football Federation, the league comprises 18 clubs with plans to add 2 more teams. The season has two tournaments: Apertura, which starts in the summer, and Clausura, which starts in the winter. The first 4 teams in the table at the end of the regular phase of the tournament qualify to the liguilla ("mini-league", or "playoff"), while the next 8 teams qualify for another playoff that determines the final 8 liguilla spots.

The league is considered the strongest in North America, and among the strongest in all of Latin America. According to the International Federation of Football History and Statistics, the league currently ranks 20th worldwide  and was ranked as the 10th strongest league in the first decade of the 21st century (2001–2010).  According to CONCACAF, the league – with an average attendance of 25,557 during the 2014–15 season – draws the largest crowds on average of any football league in the Americas and the third largest crowds of any professional sports league in North America, behind only the National Football League and Major League Baseball, and ahead of the Canadian Football League.    England's Premier League and Spain's La Liga.
Of the 56 teams to have competed in the league, América has won the title 13 times, followed by Guadalajara (12), Toluca (10), Cruz Azul (8), León, UANL and UNAM (7), and Pachuca and Santos Laguna (6). The current league champions are Monterrey, who won the Apertura 2019 tournament.
Prior to the Liga Mayor, there was no national football league in Mexico, and football competitions were held within relatively small geographical regions. The winners of the Primera Fuerza, a local league consisting of teams near and around Mexico City, was regarded as the then national competition although there were other regional leagues, such as in Veracruz, the Jalisco and the Bajío that had talented clubs. Many club owners were keen to remain amateur although they paid players under the table. The increasing interest in football would not thwart a unified professional football system in Mexico. The professional national league was established in 1943

Sumner Redstone

 Sumner Redstone

Sumner Murray Redstone (born Sumner Murray Rothstein; May 27, 1923 – August 11, 2020) was an American businessman and media magnate. He was the majority owner and chairman of the board of the National Amusements theater chain. Through National Amusements, Redstone, up until his death, and his family are majority voting shareholders of mass media conglomerate ViacomCBS (itself the parent company of the CBS television network and various cable networks). According to Forbes, as of September 2015, he was worth US$5 billion.

Redstone was formerly the executive chairman of both CBS and Viacom In February 2016, at age 92, Redstone resigned both chairmanships following a court-ordered examination by a geriatric psychiatrist. He was ultimately succeeded by Les Moonves at CBS and Philippe Dauman at Viacom
Redstone was born to a Jewish family in Boston, Massachusetts, to Belle (née Ostrovsky) and Michael Rothstein. In 1940, his father changed the family surname from "Rothstein" to "Redstone"  ("Red stone" is the literal translation of the Yiddish name, "Rothstein").  Michael Rothstein owned Northeast Theater Corporation in Dedham, Massachusetts (the forerunner of National Amusements)  and the Boston branch of the Latin Quarter Nightclub

Redstone attended the Boston Latin School, from which he graduated first in his class. In 1944, he graduated from Harvard College  where he completed the studies for his baccalaureate in three years. Later, Redstone served as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army during World War II  with a team at the Signals Intelligence Service :p. 208 that decoded Japanese messages.  After his military service, he worked in Washington, D.C., and attended Georgetown University Law Center. He transferred to Harvard Law School and received his law degree in 1947.

After completing law school, Redstone served as special assistant to U.S. Attorney General Tom C. Clark (who later served as Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1949 to 1967)  and then worked for the United States Department of Justice Tax Division in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco, and thereafter entered private practice. In 1954, he joined his father's theater chain, National Amusements and in 1967, he became CEO of the company.  As the company grew, Redstone came to believe that content would become more important than distribution mechanisms: channels of distribution (in varied forms) would always exist, but content would always be essential (Redstone coined the phrase, "Content is king!" ). He invested in Columbia Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, Orion Pictures, and Paramount Pictures (Redstone's Viacom would buy Paramount in the 1990s), all of which turned over huge profits when he chose to sell their stock in the early 1980s.

On March 29, 1979, he suffered severe burns in a fire at the Copley Plaza hotel, in Boston, but survived after thirty hours of extensive surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. Though he was warned that he might never be able to live a normal life again, eight years later he was fit enough to insist on playing tennis nearly every day  and to launch a hostile takeover of Viacom.  Redstone discussed the story of surviving the fire as a reflection of his strong determination and will to live

 Bangalore Riots

On the night of 11 August 2020, a violent clashes or riot took place in the Indian city of Bangalore, Karnataka.[5] The clashes between police and protestors started around the residence of Akhanda Srinivas Murthy, a state legislator of the Indian National Congress and later spread to the police stations of KG Halli and DJ Halli.[6] Provoked by a derogatory Facebook post on Muhammad that was allegedly shared by the nephew of the legislator,[7] a group of people arrived at his house in protest which turned violent.[8]

The incident resulted in the imposition of a curfew in the affected areas,[9] the death of 3 people in police firing and injuries to 60 policemen and several journalists inflicted by armed assailants.[10] Following which, over a 100 people who were involved in the crowd were arrested by the police.[11] Some of the crowds were also allegedly led by members of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), an Islamist political outfit[10] and has led to the arrest of a few of its leaders
On 11 August 2020, P. Naveen, the nephew of the Indian National Congress state legislator Akhanda Srinivas Murthy allegedly made a Facebook post which was derogatory towards Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.[13] According to Deccan Herald, he had a record of posting derogatory content.[14] The post went viral in the area and people began gathering in front of the legislator's residence to protest.[15] The police sent two teams to from the DJ Halli station to detain the legislator's nephew.[16] According to the police at around 8 pm, small groups had begun arriving at Kaval Byrasandra following which hundreds began arriving around DJ Halli police station demanding action against those responsible for posting the social media message.[17] Members of the SDPI were reportedly present in the crowd at DJ Halli who tried to report a complaint but claimed that the police were reluctant to do so which agitated the crowd.[10][16] With rising tensions, the crowd began accusing the police of rescuing the legislator's nephew, demanded that the accused should be handed to them and got into physical clashes with police.[18]

According to The Quint, the police at DJ Halli attempted to defuse the tension with the assistance of local community members but when one of the teams returned without the accused they forcefully entered the station, vandalised it and even set police vehicles on fire; the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) had to be called in order to disperse the crowd in order to free the policemen trapped inside the station, the KSRP began by lathi charges, proceeding to firing tear gas, then firing warning shots and eventually fired at the crowd as a last resort.[16] During the time of the confrontation as DJ Halli, a group of 200 people with petrol, kerosene and sticks arrived at the residence of Akhanda Srinivas Murthy and set it on fire.[10] The legislator or his family were reportedly not in his residence at the time of the events.[18] Some of the members of the mob managed to locate Naveen in the same neighborhood and vandalised his house who had to take refuge at his neighbors.[10] The police eventually picked up the legislator's nephew from Kaval Byrasandra.[18]

Around 11 pm, rumours started spreading that a neighboring station KG Halli was protecting the legislator's nephew.  During the confrontation with the police in DJ Halli, a section of the mob dispersed and a new mob began to arrive at KG Halli who attempted to enter the station but were met with stronger resistance from the police and in the end resorted to burning down cars parked outside.  Several policemen and journalists outside the station were injured by the armed mob The total number of involved in the mobs were corroborated to be around 1000–1200.  The police was eventually able to bring the situation under control by 1 am in the morning.  Between 1 am to 5 am, the police was reportedly involved in identifying and arresting the complicit individuals in the violence.  According to The Hindu, the police firing had overall left 3 dead and 5 injured.  The deaths were later confirmed by the city police commissioner
