Clap for Carers
Clap for Our Carers, also known as Clap for the NHS or Clap for Key Workers, is a recurring not-for-profit movement created as a gesture of appreciation for the workers of Britain's National Health Service (NHS) and other key workers during the global pandemic of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and spread to the United Kingdom in January 2020.
The idea came from Annemarie Plas and the first event took place on 20:00, 26 March 2020 (GMT). Several celebrities have supported the campaign. On 22 May Plas suggested that it should end after its tenth week, and consideration should be given to an annual National Clap For Our Carers Day in its place starting on Thursday 25 March 2021.
In December 2019, health authorities in Wuhan, China, identified a cluster of cases of a mystery pneumonia. Subsequent investigations revealed a new coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, as the causative agent and it became the focus of a major pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and spread to the United Kingdom in January 2020. The rising number of cases in the UK have been accompanied by a number of public health strategies. From 20 March 2020, most schools, colleges and nurseries closed. Three days later, stricter measures of social distancing, intended to delay the spread of the virus, were implemented. The Clap for Our Carers campaign began during the social distancing measures
