Project Power

 Project Power

Project Power is a 2020 American superhero film  directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost, produced by Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless, and written by Mattson Tomlin. It stars Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback, alongside Colson Baker, Rodrigo Santoro, Amy Landecker and Allen Maldonado, and follows a drug dealer, police officer, and former soldier who team up to stop the distribution of a pill that gives the user superpowers for five minutes.

The film was released on August 14, 2020, by Netflix. It received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the performances but criticism for not taking full advantage of its premise
In near-future New Orleans, several drug dealers obtain supplies of "Power," a drug that grants random superpowers for a five-minute period. Among the dealers is a young man named Newt.

Some time later, Robin, Newt's cousin and a dealer herself, is sought out by three teens looking to buy Power. They try to take her drugs by force, but she is rescued by Frank Shaver, an NOPD officer who is one of Robin's regular customers. Newt, now a recluse with obvious signs of drug dependency, is found by Art, who is trying to find "Biggie" - the source of Power. After a struggle, Newt is killed after he overdoses on Power, but Art obtains his phone and uses it to find Robin.

Meanwhile, Frank foils a bank robbery by a Power-enhanced thief, but while his use of Power saves his life, he is suspended for drug use. His police captain reveals that government personnel are pressuring him to terminate any investigations into Power; he also gives Frank a picture of the man they suspect to be the source of Power: Art.

Art meets and abducts Robin, who he forces to take him to the drug cartel's safehouse, where Art is wounded while eliminating several of the cartel's men. A search of the cartel's headquarters then reveals that Power users throughout New Orleans are being carefully monitored, in order to collect information for potential buyers. In the meantime, a now-suspended Frank attempts to find Robin to re-up on his supply of Power. Instead, he finds several government agents at Robin's house, interrogating her mother. Frank intervenes to drive the agents out.

While Art recovers from the wounds sustained at the supermarket, he and Robin bond. Art then reveals that after leaving the military as an Ranger, he was recruited by Teleios, a private defense contractor who experimented on him to give him powers. While Art only took Power once, his daughter, born after the experiments, began exhibiting powers young, even without having taken Power herself - a version of fetal alcohol syndrome. When Teleios found out about Tracy's powers, they sent Wallace to abduct her.

Art and Robin find Biggie at an auction for Project Power run by Teleios. At the auction, Biggie claims that Power represents the next evolution of the human species, and reveals that the powers conferred by the pill originate from animals, such as the wolverine frog or the chameleon, among others. Art infiltrates the auction and abducts Biggie at gunpoint. A firefight breaks out among the various bidders, leaving only Art and Biggie alive. Biggie then reveals that the entire operation is being run out of a ship called the Genesis. Frank, who has been following Art and Robin, then intervenes in Art's interrogation of Biggie, allowing Biggie to take a dose of Power, forcing Art, Robin, and Frank to flee.

Frank arrests Art and informs his captain. However, Art reveals that the Power epidemic in New Orleans is all part of mass testing designed to stabilize the drug, and that Tracy is the source of the drug. He then convinces Frank that his captain is actually taking orders from Teleios. Frank leaves Art to be captured by Teleios and taken to the Genesis, while he follows them. Robin, now alone, follows Wallace to the docks, where she meets Frank, and they bluff their way aboard the Genesis.

Meanwhile, Art has been taken to Dr. Gardner, the scientist who developed Power, who compares Tracy and her cell contribution to Henrietta Lacks and her contribution to medical advancements. Meanwhile, Frank navigates the ship with Robin's help, before she is forced to flee by a Powered Wallace. Frank then successfully frees Art, and the two kill Wallace. At the same time, Robin finds Tracy, and together the two escape and Tracy reunites with Art. As the four attempt to escape from the Genesis, Robin is captured by Dr. Gardner, who demands Tracy in exchange for Robin. Art confronts Dr. Gardner, and reveals that Power gives him the abilities of a pistol shrimp, which he uses to kill Gardner and her men and rescue Robin. Using his power costs his life, though Tracy is then able to resurrect him with her own powers. Art, Frank, Tracy and Robin then escape aboard a lifeboat.

The following day, authorities refuse to speak on the incidents of the previous day. Frank expresses his intent to go to the press with the whole story, while Art tells Frank that his part in the entire ordeal is over. Art then gives Robin his truck - along with money to cover her mother's medical needs - and tells her to use the greatness inside of her. Art and Tracy then depart, finally free.
