Tan France
Tanveer Wasim "Tan" France (né Safdar; Urdu: تنوير وسيم فرانس; born 20 April 1983) is an English fashion designer, television personality, and author.[1][2][3] He became the first openly gay, South Asian man on television, and the only out gay Muslim man on western television, as the fashion expert for the Netflix series Queer Eye, host of the web series Dressing Funny, and co-host of Next In Fashion.[4][5][6][7][8] He also wrote a memoir, Naturally Tan
Early life
Tanveer “Tan” Wasim Safdar was born and raised in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, to Muslim Pakistani parents.[9] France was raised in a very strict Muslim household where homosexuality was viewed negatively in his upbringing. "The word gay was never mentioned in my parents' home". France discussed how the lack of representation in media and everyday life by his community and specifically LGBTQ south Asian people caused alienation. France’s interest in fashion began at a young age, inspired by the Disney clothing that was made in his grandparents' denim factory in Bury, England.[1][10] By age thirteen, he had learned how to construct and embellish a denim jacket; in 2019, he learned his grandfather had to close the factory due to the products being Disney knockoffs.[11] He attended Hall Cross School and later Doncaster College where he studied fashion,[12] before moving to Manchester, and then to London.[13]
Career
After graduating from college, France began working for Zara.[10] He has also worked for Selfridges, Bershka, among other retailers to learn more about the wholesale business side, and finally Chanel to learn more about manufacturing. "I wanted to diversify my experience, learning everything from design to delivery to wholesale." He became managing director in his early twenties.[1] France was company director at Shade Clothing before he opened his solo company.[10]
France started working in the United States in 2008 and moved to the US in 2015.[13] In late 2011, France founded a women's clothing line, Kingdom & State.[14] The clothing designed by France includes items that meet Mormon clothing guidelines. “I wanted to create a brand that you couldn’t tell was modest clothing for Mormons,” France says. “These girls were cute and wanted to be fashionable. I wanted to create a London look for them that just so happened to cover the areas of their bodies they had to cover as Mormon women. And that’s where it took off really well [in Utah], really quickly.”[15]
France's business and brands became so successful his designs were purchased by the likes of ModCloth and Forever 21.[16] France is also a designer and CEO in the 2016-founded Rachel Parcell clothing line, sold at Nordstrom[17]
France appeared in the music video for Taylor Swift's song "You Need to Calm Down".[18]
In an interview with the ITV programme This Morning, France said that he had sold all three of his businesses after starting work for Netflix.[19]
Personal life
Tan currently lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his husband, illustrator Rob France.[20] In June 2018, he stated that he would like to have children with his husband by surrogate.[21]
France has a deep love for cooking and especially baking. He learned how to cook and sew at age nine
