Crisis on Infinite Earths

"Crisis on Infinite Earths" is the sixth annual Arrowverse crossover event, featuring episodes of the television series Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow on The CW. The Supergirl, Batwoman, and The Flash episodes aired in December 2019, while the Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow episodes aired in January 2020. Additionally, events in the Black Lightning episode "The Book of Resistance: Chapter Four: Earth Crisis", airing between Batwoman and The Flash, and a two-issue comic featuring characters and concepts not able to appear in the live-action episodes, tie into the event. The crossover's events resulted in the entire franchise being rebooted.

"Crisis on Infinite Earths", which is inspired by the comic of the same name, continues plot lines established in the previous crossover, "Elseworlds". Moreover, the preceding episodes of Arrow season eight and much of The Flash season six served as a prelude to the crossover. In "Crisis on Infinite Earths", the Monitor gathers Green Arrow, the Flash, Supergirl, Batwoman, Sara Lance, Ray Palmer, and several "Paragons" from throughout the multiverse to stop the Anti-Monitor from destroying all of reality.

Allusions to "Crisis on Infinite Earths" began in 2014, with the pilot episode of The Flash. The adaptation of the comic storyline began in earnest during the development of "Elseworlds", with the crossover title revealed at the end of "Elseworlds" in December 2018. In mid-2019, multiple castings were revealed, including that actors who previously portrayed DC characters in other media, such as Burt Ward and Kevin Conroy would appear in the crossover. "Crisis on Infinite Earths" also sees Cress Williams from fellow CW series Black Lightning appear and cross over with the Arrowverse for the first time, along with actors reprising their roles from various DC film and television series. Filming took place from the end of September 2019 until the beginning of November 2019
Synopsis
Prelude
To prepare for the coming Crisis, the Monitor recruits Oliver Queen and sends him on missions to collect various items.[1] He also retrieves the cadaver of Lex Luthor and revives him.[2][3] Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen learn that the Crisis date has moved up to December 2019, and that in order to save billions, the Flash must die.[4] To learn more about what happens to him, Barry travels to Earth-3 to see Jay Garrick and Joan Williams, who have been tracking anti-matter signatures across the multiverse. They send Barry's mind forward in time, causing him to see billions of timelines where the multiverse is destroyed and the one where he dies saving it.[5]

Meanwhile, on one of his missions, Oliver witnesses the destruction of Earth-2 from an anti-matter wave.[6] Back in Star City, William Clayton, Connor Hawke, and Mia Smoak mysteriously time travel from 2040 to the present[7] while Oliver and John Diggle learn that Lyla Michaels has been working with the Monitor.[8] Minutes before the Crisis begins, Nash Wells is sucked into a chamber under Central City after being promised a new life.[3] At the start of Crisis, red skies loom over Central City and Lian Yu, where Lyla comes to collect Oliver and Mia. She tells them she is now a "Harbinger of things to come".[9][10]

On another Earth, the skies turn red over Freeland, causing Jennifer Pierce's powers to adversely react and tear her between her Earth and those of two of her counterparts. As the Pierce family and Peter Gambi try to bring her back, the anti-matter wave overtakes them but Jefferson Pierce is teleported away
As the Crisis begins, the anti-matter wave destroys hundreds of parallel universes. Meanwhile, on Earth-38, Brainiac 5 detects the anti-matter wave approaching Argo City, prompting Kara Danvers to warn her mother Alura Zor-El, her cousin Clark Kent, and his wife Lois Lane. Clark and Lois narrowly send their son Jonathan off into an escape pod just as the wave wipes out Argo. On Earth-1, Harbinger brings Oliver, Mia, Barry, Kate Kane, and Sara Lance and Ray Palmer of the Legends to Earth-38 and rescues the Kents from Argo, though Alura was not as fortunate. As Harbinger briefs the gathered heroes on the threat of the Anti-Monitor, the Monitor raises a quantum tower to impede the anti-matter wave while the DEO and Lena Luthor work to evacuate Earth-38. After learning Jonathan's pod landed on Earth-16, Lois, Sara, and Brainiac 5 leave to get him while the others stay behind to fend off the Anti-Monitor's forces. In preparation for his own death, Oliver passes the mantle of Green Arrow to Mia. When he learns Barry is fated to die, he argues with the Monitor over the deal they made last year.[a] The heroes make their stand at the tower and fend off an army of shadow demons until the Monitor teleports them off-world, deeming the battle to be lost. Oliver temporarily nullifies the Monitor's powers with a specialty arrow and stays behind to ensure the exodus succeeds, managing to save under half of Earth-38's population. Back on Earth-1, Lois's team returns with Jonathan before the Monitor brings a dying Oliver to say good-bye; commenting that this was not how he was supposed to die. Nash, now going by the name "Pariah" for releasing the Anti-Monitor, appears and announces that events have changed and everything is doomed.[12]

To aid them in their cause, Harbinger recruits Mick Rory and his Waverider from Earth-74 because the Earth-1 Legends are unavailable. In the wake of Oliver's death, which he cannot undo because of the Anti-Monitor's growing power, the Monitor consults the Book of Destiny and learns of seven Paragons who could turn the tide. Two of them are Sara, the "Paragon of Destiny", and Kara, the "Paragon of Hope". The Monitor also reveals the Paragon of Truth is another Superman (whom Clark, Lois, and Iris locate on Earth-96) and the Paragon of Courage is a "Bat of the Future"; whom Kara and Kate deduce is Bruce Wayne of Earth-99. After stealing the Book of Destiny, Lex briefly mind controls Clark-96 to kill Clark-38, but is stopped by Lois. Meanwhile, Kate fails to convince an elderly crippled Bruce, who became a killer and is in turn accidentally killed in a heated confrontation with her and Kara. Elsewhere, Sara, Barry, Mia, and John Constantine take Oliver's body to a Lazarus Pit on Earth-18 to try and resurrect him, but the accumulating anti-matter across the multiverse prevents them from bringing his soul back. Back on the Waverider, the Monitor tasks Ray, with Cisco Ramon's help, with building a "Paragon detector"; which identifies Kate as the "Paragon of Courage," instead of Earth-99 Bruce. Unbeknownst to everyone, Harbinger is secretly contacted by the Anti-Monitor.[13]

Ray's "Paragon detector" identifies Barry as the "Paragon of Love", J'onn J'onzz as the "Paragon of Honor" and Ivy Town scientist Ryan Choi as the "Paragon of Humanity"; so Ray, Iris, and Ralph Dibny leave to recruit a reluctant Choi. After the Monitor restores Cisco's powers, Team Flash and Pariah return to the Anti-Monitor's chamber beneath Central City, where they find an anti-matter cannon and Earth-90's Flash powering it. Cisco frees him, but the cannon starts going critical, so Pariah recruits Jefferson Pierce to contain the energy. Barry-1 volunteers to destroy the cannon, which would result in his death. However, Barry-90 stops him, claiming the Monitor didn't specifically say which Flash would die in the Crisis, and takes Barry-1's place. Meanwhile, Constantine, Mia, and Diggle visit Lucifer on Earth-666 to get his help in entering Purgatory and retrieve Oliver's soul. Before they can leave, Jim Corrigan appears so he can bestow onto Oliver the Spectre's power. Oliver accepts, and Constantine's team is sent back to the Waverider without him. While the heroes regroup, the Anti-Monitor sends a brainwashed Harbinger to kill the Monitor so he can absorb his power and finish destroying the multiverse. Before the remaining heroes and Earth-1 are destroyed, Pariah sends the Paragons to the Vanishing Point to keep them safe, where they witness Lex replace Superman-96 with himself by using a page from the Book of Destiny.[14]

A flashback reveals that in the planet Maltus, a younger Monitor attempted to time-travel to witness the birth of the universe, but accidentally arrived to the anti-matter universe resulted a doppelgänger of himself, the Anti-Monitor, of learning the multiverse's existence. It has been a month since Earth-1 was destroyed. All the paragons except Barry are seen, as he has been missing for a month. Ryan Choi has been seen working on a teleporter with Lex. Moments later Barry appears from the speed force and is panicked as he thinks there is no way out. Then we see Oliver and Jim meditating in Purgatory. Oliver remembers his struggles since sinking of the Queen's Gambit, which Corrigan explains that they led Oliver to his destiny against the Anti-Monitor. Oliver leaves to go to the Vanishing Point and rescues the Paragons. As he manages to drop Supergirl, Ryan, and Lex in Maltus' past, everyone else gets separated as Flash zooms through the Speed Force to find them in different moments where he even has an encounter with his DC Extended Universe counterpart. Meanwhile, Lex knocks out Supergirl and Ryan with his upgrades and goes to confront a younger Monitor after knocking out Xeen Novu. While he mentions about what will happen, Lex states that he will help him make sure that it doesn't happen. Supergirl and Ryan catch up to them as Supergirl fights Lex. After getting everyone, Flash picks up Supergirl, Ryan, and Lex as they arrive at the anti-matter universe. Anti-Monitor arrives stating that any version of Mar Novu wouldn't resist him. As the Paragons fight the Shadow Demons, Oliver in his Spectre form fights Anti-Monitor. Unleashing his power, Oliver shoots up the signal that gives Flash and Supergirl the opportunity to fan the flames as a new Multiverse is born. Once that was done, Anti-Monitor is nowhere to be found as Oliver expires in Flash's arms.

Waking up in her apartment with Alex, Supergirl heads to where the Nobel Peace Prize is being handed out. She and Nia Nal discover that the recipient is Lex Luthor. In addition, Supergirl finds that the D.E.O. is now property of LuthorCorp. Martian Manhunter arrives where he remembers what happened. Supergirl responds to an attack on National City where she runs into Weather Witch. Before Weather Witch can attack Supergirl, she is knocked out by Flash who mentioned that Weather Witch is one of his enemies. Both of them figure out that their Earths have been merged. They are approached by a man named Marv who asks for an autograph. In Central City, sewer workers find Nash Wells' unconscious body. Meanwhile, Sara Lance finds Ray Palmer at the bar. Martian Manhunter arrives and restores Ray's memories. Arriving at Green Arrow's bunker, Sara runs into John Diggle, Dinah Drake, and Rene Ramirez who mentioned that Martian Manhunter has been restoring the memories of those who were involved in the Crisis. However, they cannot find Green Arrow's body. Heat Wave is running the book signing of his latest book when Star City comes under attack by Beebo. Flash, Supergirl, Atom, Batwoman, and Sara help out until they find that Beebo isn't real and that the totem holders are still on the Waverider. Sara and Flash discover that it was an illusion to cover a heist committed by Sargon the Sorcerer. Before knocking Sargon out, Sara states to him that Beebo is off limits. At S.T.A.R. Labs, Martian Manhunter restores Caitlin Snow's memories and even Nash's memories as he apologizes for his actions. Later that night, Flash and Sara talk about Oliver's sacrifice when they are suddenly attacked by Shadow Demons. Ryan and his baby have been rescued by Sara as Martian Manhunter rounds up their other allies. Supergirl, Superman, Flash, Sara Lance, Spartan, Wild Dog, Martian Manhunter, Batwoman, and Dreamer fight Shadow Demons at a pier. Some of them reassemble into Anti-Monitor as he begins his plot to erase the Multiverse again. Heat Wave and Killer Frost work to defend Ray, Ryan, and Nash from the Shadow Demons and receive aid from Black Lightning who was previously picked up by Martian Manhunter. As Anti-Monitor grows in height, Flash briefly leaves to help finish a bomb mapped out by Ray, Ryan, and Nash that would shrink Anti-Monitor into the Microverse. Once that was done, Ray becomes Atom and flies to the battle. After shrinking Superman out of Anti-Monitor's hands, Supergirl throws the bomb at Anti-Monitor who shrinks into the Microverse. Later that night, the unnamed President of the United States does her presidential adress to the nation where she mentions the Anti-Monitor's defeat and the sacrifice of Oliver Queen. Oliver's voice is heard talking about the Multiverse as Earth-2, Earth-9, Earth-12, Earth-19, Earth-21, and Earth-96 are seen. Then we are shown the amalgamated Earth that is now labeled as Earth-Prime. Flash, Supergirl, White Canary, Batwoman, Superman, Martian Manhunter, and Black Lightning hold a memorial for Green Arrow. The building they are in is an old S.T.A.R. Labs facility as Flash proposes that they meet on occasion to discuss things. A monkey is heard as they work to deal with some pest control. An open cage is seen with the name "Gleek" on it. The final show shows the building that resembles the Hall of Justice.
